    Read: Luke 13:23-30

    โ€Œโ€Œโ€Œ๐Ÿ”ŽFocus

โ€œFor ways are under the eyes of the Lord, and he examines all their paths.โ€

    Proverbs 5:21 (NRSVue)

    โ€Œโ€ŒโœŸ Devotion

โ€ŒWhen you read the passage (Luke 13:23-30), what did you focus on? Did you focus on ‘ command to enter the narrow door? Did you focus on its narrowness?

โ€ŒWhile Jesus’ answer is very important, you’ll note he didn’t actually answer the question, at least in any way that is definitive.

โ€Œโ€œLord, will only a few be saved?โ€ (Luke 13:23 NRSVue)

โ€ŒWhat if the issue is the question itself?

โ€Œโ€œThere are no right to wrong .โ€

    Ursula K. Le Guin

    โ€Œ

If you don’t the right questions, you don’t get the right answers.

    Edward Hodnett

โ€ŒHow did you read the question in the passage? Is the asker wanting to know who gets in and who is kept out (exclusionary)? Or is the asker wanting to know if they can even make it?

โ€ŒOur reading of the question helps us define the answer, thus understanding how we see the question is important. Is it a question of rule or a question of ?โ€Œ

Another possible view is the goal of the asker. Is this about seeking the best way, the sure way (what can I get away with), or a different way?โ€Œ

What if Jesus’ long answer was less about rules and such, but instead about focus? Are you focusing on Jesus (God) and God’s ways, or are you focusing on the behaviors of ?

โ€ŒWhat if the narrow way is more like a horse wearing blinders? A horse that wears blinders is doing so because their rider or driver is seeking to keep them from being distracted from everything around them, and wanting the horse to focus on what’s ahead, and on the rider (driver).

    โ€Œโ€Œ๐Ÿค” Reflection

โ€ŒWhen you first read the passage, what was your focus on? Has your focus changed at all? Do you ever find yourself watching others more than you are watching and seeking God?

    โ€Œโ€Œโ๏ธ Act

โ€ŒFind one small and simple thing can you remove from your to narrow your focus on God.

    โ€Œ๐Ÿ™ Prayer

Help us to look ahead to you, Lord God, and not look side to side at others. Amen.

    So Say The Skies

Psalm 107:1โ€“3, 23โ€“32; Job 37:1โ€“13; Luke 21:25โ€“28 One of the most useful tools invented, and also one of the most irritating is the clock. Humanity has long felt the need to measure time. Multiple cultures used some iteration of a sundial to divide the day. The Egyptians invented a โ€œclockโ€ that used water drops to…

    Light It Up

Psalm 107:1โ€“3, 23โ€“32; Job 29:21โ€“30:15; Acts 21:1โ€“16 Life is full of ups and downs. Psalm 107 starts with such a positive tone. Then mishaps and adventures and trials occur. Then back to rejoicing in God. It doesn’t seem to really matter your place, station, or nation in life, there are ups and downs. Even in…

    Port Wise

Psalm 107:1โ€“3, 23โ€“32; Job 29:1โ€“20; Acts 20:1โ€“16 “Any port in a storm!” From a strictly practical standpoint, that sailor quip makes sense. Yet, the port may have dangers of its own that were unexpected. If, for example, naval ships from opposing sides set anchor in the same bay due to a storm, once the storm…

    The Fruit We Yield

Psalm 52; Jeremiah 22:1โ€“9; Luke 6:43โ€“45 Have you ever been somewhere with a beautiful bowl filled with fruit, then picked up a piece of fruit, and realized that it was fake? It looks pretty and improves the ambiance, but beyond that, it is useless for living. Christians have a discrepancy (okay, we have many). We…
