    Read: Luke 13:23-30

    β€Œβ€Œβ€ŒπŸ”ŽFocus

β€œFor ways are under the eyes of the Lord, and he examines all their paths.”

    Proverbs 5:21 (NRSVue)

    β€Œβ€ŒβœŸ Devotion

β€ŒWhen you read the passage (Luke 13:23-30), what did you focus on? Did you focus on ‘ command to enter the narrow door? Did you focus on its narrowness?

β€ŒWhile Jesus’ answer is very important, you’ll note he didn’t actually answer the question, at least in any way that is definitive.

β€Œβ€œLord, will only a few be saved?” (Luke 13:23 NRSVue)

β€ŒWhat if the issue is the question itself?

β€Œβ€œThere are no right to wrong .”

    Ursula K. Le Guin

    β€Œ

If you don’t the right questions, you don’t get the right answers.

    Edward Hodnett

β€ŒHow did you read the question in the passage? Is the asker wanting to know who gets in and who is kept out (exclusionary)? Or is the asker wanting to know if they can even make it?

β€ŒOur reading of the question helps us define the answer, thus understanding how we see the question is important. Is it a question of rule or a question of ?β€Œ

Another possible view is the goal of the asker. Is this about seeking the best way, the sure way (what can I get away with), or a different way?β€Œ

What if Jesus’ long answer was less about rules and such, but instead about focus? Are you focusing on Jesus (God) and God’s ways, or are you focusing on the behaviors of ?

β€ŒWhat if the narrow way is more like a horse wearing blinders? A horse that wears blinders is doing so because their rider or driver is seeking to keep them from being distracted from everything around them, and wanting the horse to focus on what’s ahead, and on the rider (driver).

    β€Œβ€ŒπŸ€” Reflection

β€ŒWhen you first read the passage, what was your focus on? Has your focus changed at all? Do you ever find yourself watching others more than you are watching and seeking God?

    β€Œβ€ŒβοΈ Act

β€ŒFind one small and simple thing can you remove from your to narrow your focus on God.

    β€ŒπŸ™ Prayer

Help us to look ahead to you, Lord God, and not look side to side at others. Amen.

    Faithfully Wise

Psalm 92:1–4, 12–15; 1 Kings 10:26–11:8; Hebrews 11:4–13 We often will use the word wisdom in regards to King Solomon. He was granted the gift of wisdom for the benefit of the people, and they greatly benefited. With the temple being built, on the surface, it would seem that they were benefiting spiritually (or at…

Psalm 92:1–4, 12–15; Genesis 3:14–24; Hebrews 2:5–9 There is something odd about the story in the Garden of Eden, and it isn’t the Fall (though that is central to our faith). The story in the Garden of Eden revolves around loving obedience/respect of God (that was a failure) and two trees. The apple (usually red)…

    Changing Diapers

Psalm 74; Isaiah 26:16–27:1; Luke 11:14–28 When Joni (my wife) was pregnant with our first (to be born) child, we had an odd conversation with another couple. They told us (almost mockingly) that soon our conversation would change to include the color and consistency of our child’s poop. We chuckled. That was ridiculous. Who would…

    Skies and Hearts Aflame

Psalm 74; 1 Kings 18:17–40; Revelation 20:7–15 Being made a fool of for Christ is something that Christians have had to deal with through the ages. Whether it’s because of beliefs and practices that go against the norm, or the reality that Christians are just as fallen as the rest of humanity. There is, however,…
